EVERY civilization will experience a build-up of systemic errors that it cannot correct, and will collapse. The West has had the fragile luxury of self-critical, self-correcting mechanisms to take out the built-up errors. These mechanisms clearly no longer work, esp. in the USA

It's not linear, but often cyclical. Rome & China both completely remade themselves several times. China is just beginning a new incarnation as of 40 years ago. It's always the end. Until it's not. Could be our end but is a chapter not yet written, let's see how it turns out.
