Why do many Republicans cling to the insurrectionists, and to Trump? Because right-wing media continually pumps Republicans full of fear, and the Trumpists claim that they're the only possible protector.https://noahpinion.substack.com/p/insurrection-thoughts-113 …

They laid the groundwork for the past five years, repeating the keywords billions of times; now they are mobilizing for suppression. Lol, the connection between me and "clinging to insurrectionists and to Trump" is approximately zero. My concern is that this terrible incident (and the rhetorical frame being created around it) will be used to justify universal restrictions on speech and other rights.

I did. I'm not a "Trumpist" and don't think conservatives should "[cling] to insurrection for the illusion of safety." Like Cotton, McConnell, etc., I condemned the riots on moral grounds and think it is a disaster for conservatives on political grounds.

That's good! But my point is that making Republicans fear that they're the imminent target of political persecution by the institutions of American society pumps them full of fear, and causes them to cast around for a protector...and who do they settle on? Trump!

Yes, but you are conflating two separate phenomena. The fear of political suppression is real and justified. At the same time, the solution, we might agree, is not Trump (and definitely not insurrection).

But you have to understand the effect that fearmongering has. There's a time and a place for worrying about the things you're worrying about...and it's just not now!
