Today I've been researching the Finland prison system as compared to ours and I recognize that we knew this already but literally, America, wtf?

The problem is translation. The Finnish population is very different from the American population. The United States, unfortunately, is also an exceptionally violent country, including organized violence through gangs. There is a limit to hehabilitative-style programs here.

Yes and no. We were thinking about implementing similar policies until the 80s when the war on drugs screwed everything up. I recognize that these policies would look very different in America because of what you point out but I suspect it'd be better than the current nightmare.

We'll see in the next 5-10 years. California—and municipal governments in SF and LA—are currently running a huge experiment in decriminalization and therapeutic-first prison policies. It will be interesting to see the results.

Decriminalization attempts here tend to be overreactions. What needs to happen is proportional restitution. Offending parties still need to be held responsible to the harmed and society, but that responsibility needs to be proportional. Cali wants to remove responsibility (bad)
