      That’s because the specific location doesn’t matter as much. It’s becoming a commoditized provider of natural resources and rulesets. Meanwhile, our friends and business partners are in the cloud.

      I remember writing a decade or so ago that Portland seemed one of the towns with the most potential to become a big startup hub. That seems much less likely now.

      The problem with Portland is the problem with Sacramento: they're too close to Seattle and San Francisco, where companies can find infrastructure and talent. Plus, Washington State has no income tax, while Oregon is close to 10%.
