The very definition of political "moderate" (n.) comes from the fact that they moderate (v.) their more extreme compatriots. The right can't "moderate" the far left and the left can't "moderate" the far right—one side can defeat, but not moderate, the other.

Yes, this nicely captures my deep concern. When the right tries to moderate the left, or the left tries to moderate the right, tribal wars worsen. The best bulwarks against extremism are those on the *same* side (w/allies). But that is hard.
