Good point. A society should be oriented towards giving the working class a stable structure for dignity. Most people don't want to be astronauts, they want family, faith, security, beauty, stability, love.
Exactly. Reduction of success to careerist upward mobility is a classic case of academics reading their own personal life assumptions into the subject they are holding forth on. Instead we should be thinking about success more in terms of what Eric Erickson calls “generativity.”
