I depart from traditional conservatism in that I am not sympathetic to the anybody can succeed if they work hard narrative that they often promote. Traits matter. And traits are a matter of genetic luck. A just society must grapple with this honestly, wisely, and humanely.

Exactly. Reduction of success to careerist upward mobility is a classic case of academics reading their own personal life assumptions into the subject they are holding forth on. Instead we should be thinking about success more in terms of what Eric Erickson calls “generativity.”
