A trend that must stop is people who care about/LIKE Blacks, Appalachians, etc. refusing to discuss real and obvious cultural problems for these groups because "that would play into the hands of the bigots." In reality, done well, honest conversation will do the exact opposite.

That's its intention. It's a cultural signal meant to signify elite status--like a posh accent, except that Americans are bad at accents, so they use pop culture references and political positions instead.
