I interviewed a 92yo black man for a PBS documentary a few years ago. He told me he remembered living with his grandmother, a freed slave, and 85 years later attending the Obama inauguration. It floored me. Tragic history, yes, but incredibly inspiring metaphor for America.

It really is my hope that we eventually manage to sift out the grievance entrepreneurs sufficiently that we can finally explore the real history unexploited from cynicism exploiters. But the rewards for ideological exploitation make that unlikely for some time.

I want my kids to come to terms with the real history. But as long as our institutions any to make them somehow complicit in crimes they had nothing to do with. They will never get close to them.
