Last weekend, I took my oldest son on a 48-hour train journey from Seattle to Chicago. I wanted him to see the vast beauty of the American interior—and to toughen him up with some hard travel.

Snapshots out of a moving train! 
The Empire Builder is the best long train ride in America. Need to do it twice to catch the night sights. Enough delays etc to make sure you get to see in the daytime what you missed the previous trip. Enjoy!
Those types of trips are the greatest way to expose our kids to the wonders of this country. When my kids moved west (unfortunately) I gave them National Parks passes. Due to all the trips on the EC growing up, they said it was the best gift ever.
