"Murder rates would be up to five times higher than they are but for medical developments over the past 40 years...Without this technology, there would be no less than 50,000 and as many as 115,000 homicides annually instead of an actual 15,000 to 20,000" https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1124155/ …pic.twitter.com/yeGWxrvEL4

Interesting. I would love to see the rates over time, controlling for medical technology improvements and age demographics. Is it possible that we are just as violent as during the late 80s, just proportionately older and better able to save lives?

Can you research what the cost is for hospitals to treat the shootings. There has to be a large amount of victims without insurance.

If we had increasing gun injuries that more than offset declining fatalities this dubious hypothesis might have merit. But gun injuries have declined along with fatalities as lawful gun ownership and carry rights have increased.

I don't think it's mostly about guns. Shooting someone would just about always be charged as attempted murder IIUC, even if the victim survived. Cases charged as aggravated assault would probably be unarmed or armed with melee weapons.

Definitely not in NYC. I grew up and still live in NYC and it is nothing like it was in the '80s.

1/2 I’m not sure the argument is just as violent. There certainly has been a decline in the rate of assaults. The argument, I think, is more that we’ve suppressed one metric by keeping more people alive.

2/2 It’s about the proportion of death to assault. If memory serves the formula Dr. Harris used was death/(assault+death). So, you can have a decline in assaults or injuries but still measure that more death would have occurred if not for advances in medical/trauma care.
