BREAKING: Seattle City Council moves to abolish the entire Seattle Police Department and replace it with a "civilian led Department of Community Safety & Violence Prevention." They want to replace the police force with nonprofit programs and "community-led activities."pic.twitter.com/JnFaWusvvv

I'm not saying that the City Council wouldn't want to do what your tweet implies, nor that the draft resolution isn't an attempt to take a preliminary step toward that goal, but nothing in that resolution is explicit about abolishing anything. 1/

It looks like it sets up a new department that would have oversight and would have the authority to really mess with how policing is done, but that's really different than replacing the police with this new civilian entity, which this does not seem to do. 2/

They explicitly say they want to cut 50% now, then beginning in 2021 replace the department (i.e., abolish it) with community-led programs. It's fairly clear on this and matches with the rhetoric of the groups leading this movement, such as Decriminalize Seattle.

That's one way to read between the lines. The other way is that the new department is growing alongside the SPD and gradually stealing funds from it. But I've read it several times and just don't see the explicit language that does what you say in the way you say it.

Doesn't the second picture, line item #5, specifically state "defund the police"?

I don’t like wokesters and the tone of the resolution but they mentioned that the will replace “certain functions” of the police. Your reporting is a bit biased. Please don’t be the right-wing version of the mainstream media!

They want to cut 50% now and use part of that money to plan ways to further reduce and replace police in 2021. Not going to be much left after that.

Because they’re taking some things off the shoulders of the police. Things that social workers can do and police aren’t trained for. We’ve been dumping responsibility on the police for years. Police aren’t social workers and jails aren’t mental health hospitals.

This is consistent with their continual attempt to restrict the police. By Ingraham HS there are extensive issues on 99, prostitution, drugs, fights. Students walk to school through all of it. The attendence lady and metermaids try to deal with it bc police are told to stand down

No where does it say replace🧐 it says “new” which doesn’t not mean “in place of” furthermore it still allocated requirements for spd in 21
