Abolish SPD and replace it with a "community-led" agency. They want to completely eliminate the existing department, i.e., abolish it.
It'd be like giving Chicago to Al Capone back in the day......
Playing devils advocate here. I dont know if it said it was dissolving the entire dept. It looks like the are creating a civilian led oversight dept. We really need to focus on more training, better management and hiring practices. Listen to jocko willink
Jocko really has great ideas but it would mean more funding to police for training. That’s not happening in this time.
I believe state law is that every county has a sheriff's office. If no police, then sheriff. 1 irony of proposals is that reducing local police budget will mean more reliance of federal help for specialized law enforcement activities (not sure that all want that).
It says create a community led agency. It does NOT say abolish the police. It does reduce their duties though.
Even a community led department is a contradiction. A community non-profit is not a city department. If they require city to purchase services from a non-profit two potential issues: competitive bid/use of public $s & eventually employees will want city benefits.
Don’t see any place where is says replace either. Actually it still refers to the Spd through out. They want to restructure. Creating a new entity and refocus the old. How do you note budget and structure for an abolished dept?
