Doubtful. Certainly not this way now with remote workers at Microsoft, Amazon, etc. They are desperate for talent, their margins are massive, and they're happy to pay good developers $250-500k. They can cut cost on office space, leases, etc.
It's about to get much better for tech and knowledge workers generally: -The baby boomers who still run the institutions have finally mastered Zoom. -Remote working is here to stay. -Big city salaries at small town cost of living is the arbitrage of the century.

Why would companies keep paying big city salaries if their people don't have that cost of living? If I recall correctly, Zuckerberg already said something along the lines of, "If you move we may adjust your salary long term."
