I think your error, Damon, is assuming that conservativism is about "conserving the present." Deeper than this, it's a fight for the founding principles. Sometimes it's a moderate "conserving" that's needed, sometimes it's a radical "recovering" that's needed.
The problem, in my view, is that we have too many people, including on the Supreme Court, that are conservative by termperament, i.e., don't want to rock the boat. We need more people who are "conservative by principle," and ready to fight on a different ground entirely.
