What prevents me from starting a paid Substack is that it's $5/month, or $60 a year -- more than a subscription to the New Yorker. Puzzling to me that people shell out that much for one person's writing.

It's more of an affirmation in a single, unique voice. People will pay $18 to get one vinyl album from their favorite artist, when you can get a whole month of unlimited music from Spotify for $9.99.
