On the contrary, it was America’s actual Founding principles of justice and equality that so inspired Taney’s bête noire, Abraham Lincoln. America is imperfect. But it was, at its core, conceived in justice. To assert otherwise, a la the “1619 Project,” is historical illiteracy.

Jefferson to Lincoln to King—it's all a beautiful progression and gradual perfection of the American idea of 1776. Still more to go, but we should be proud of our history.

I recently reread some of MLK's work and was blown away by his invocation of and fluency in the constitution and the history of the founding. He almost sounded like a Claremont scholar!
