It's almost as if a culture of stable families, academic excellence, hard work, and entrepreneurship is the path to success.

There are also economic barriers to migration. Wealthier individuals and families have greater capacity to make the move.

Yes for China and India, but not for some southeast Asian countries like Vietnam.

I’m not sure I’m clear on your argument. Wealth is a comparative advantage in the ability to migrate, one would expect to see effects of this in a variety of group-specific economic markers.

Sure, recent Chinese and Indian immigrants come with distinct educational advantages. But the Vietnamese who came after the war, for example, were very poor and traumatized by violence. The same is true, to a certain extent, for Hmong and Cambodians who are also on the list.

Yes, this seems to prove my point. The success of immigrant communities can be better explained by “wealth as a precondition for membership” than by natural inclination towards economically beneficial behaviors. This is why imm communities w/o that selector perform around avg.

Well, maybe not! The SE Asians came poor, traumatized by war, lacking language skills, had no capital or education, and now 40 years later out-earn white Americans (and dramatically out-earn other large minority groups). Pretty good success.

Or, as with many things, it could be a combination of factors, and having a single narrative for a wide diverse group is challenging.
