This is mainly being pushed by activist groups. "political leaders" have been pretty resistant to just handing out keys to hotel rooms. Rightfully so. "basic property rights" were upheld. the cops removed the agitators.
True in this instance, but city councilmembers in Los Angeles are threatening to "commandeer" hotels and then purchase them if they go bankrupt during the shutdown.

There are fringe leaders in SF trying to score point with a progressive base calling for "commandeering" hotels too But these are not serious proposals with any hope turning into reality. Leaders in big metros understand that they can not kneecap their tourist industry.
