I'll bite. In 2015, Bill Kristol's Weekly Standard and Jonah Goldberg's National Review were the standard-bearers of mainstream conservative thought. In 2020, the Weekly Standard has evaporated and Jonah Goldberg is writing a Substack like every dude in Brooklyn.
And sure, those publications aren't primarily about economics, but you have to admit that their worldview, especially their economic ideas, is not popular now, even among conservatives. I am not a Trumper, didn't vote for him in 2016, but the change seems fairly obvious.
More charitably, Chris, the problem is thinking that Bill and Jonah represent a monolithic view of the non-populist right--especially on economics, which isn't really the focus of either of them, but also on any other policy issue.
The reformocons are different from the supply-siders are different from the libertarians. Within each group, there is lots of diversity. The MO of the national conservatives is to see a binary world on the right and to paint caricatures of everyone who doesn't join them.
Lots of non-populist conservatives think economic policy should be focused on benefitting families and communities! Just because we think Oren and other populists are wrong about means doesn't mean we don't share their ends. So why such demonization?
I'm not demonizing anyone. But I think it's obvious that the conservative consensus needs to be reconsidered. The intellectuals who led us into the Iraq War and boosted China into the WTO did a lot of damage to the country—and my generation will pay the price.
We can quibble about nuance, terminology, and the precise delineations within that group, but the broader point stands: the 2000-2015 worldview is gone; creative thinking needs to replace it. I welcome anyone—reformicons, populists, etc.—who contributes to that discussion.
