NYC has just published expanded data on covid-19 by race. The picture has become even more stark. In every category--cases, hospitalization & deaths--this disease is hitting African Americans & Latinos much harder. A shocking indictment of inequality in our society.pic.twitter.com/dKWjrox7cJ

Okay, but why? What specific inequality caused this outcome?

Low-income people of color in NYC are more likely to live in the crowded housing conditions where the virus spreads easily, are less likely to be able to tele-commute, and have endured unequal access to healthcare prior to this crisis. (and this is just a partial list.)

This is due to poverty. And what caused the poverty? I think if you trace it back LBJ & the Great Society.

This is why: 1, many low-incoming color have precondition diseases like diabetes, because people like to drink soda. 2, many of them weren’t too serious about this virus and think minority can’t get it; no mask; no social distance. 3, they live in a crowded place and take SUBWAY.

Generational poverty, limited education = unemployed, underemployed low wage jobs, lack of sick pay, sick days, healthcare, food deserts, density, housing, and public policy for a century or more. And with all of this, it's still not that easy to answer.
