Robert Doar at @AEI made this same argument in a recent presentation. At best, I think it shows the limitation of how we measure poverty—in a significant qualitative way, as you look at the human indicators under this material baseline, many communities are *worse off* now.

To name a few: intact families, social capital, civic and religious participation, entrepreneurship rates, overdose deaths, obesity. In the bottom 20% of ZIP codes, all of these are much worse than 1963.
