1/4 I watched "Joker" with my wife earlier this week. Political activists are trying to score points—the film's director, Todd Philips, complained about "cancel culture" leading up to its release—but I don't think the film is reducible to a partisan interpretation.
2/4 Throughout the film, I was thinking about a story I wrote earlier this year about Christopher Morisette, a man born at Western State Hospital, abandoned by his family, and shuffled through a series of foster homes, jails, rehabs, and mental health facilities.
