Progressives in Washington State are trying to pass Initiative I-100/R-88, which would legalize race-based discrimination on college admissions and public sector employment.

In theory, this is supposed to level the playing field for minorities, but in practice, it will hurt Asian-Americans, reducing their admissions to the public university system and unfairly punishing their academic success.

This is personal for me. My two sons are Asian-American and my oldest is passionate about math and science. I don't want to have to explain to them that "people who look like mommy have to score higher to get into college than people who look like daddy."

Progressives claim that they oppose "institutionalized racism," but R-88 would add another layer of bureaucracy with the sole purpose of discriminating on the basis of race, which is the definition of "institutionalized racism."

The outcomes could be devastating for Asian-Americans. When a system like this was put in place at Harvard, it created an "Asian-American penalty" that effectively reduced Asian-American admission rates by 73%.

So when you get your ballot later this year, remember: institutionalized racism is wrong. Race-based discrimination on college admissions is wrong. Reject R-88 in November.
