I'll be on a KSARC panel tonight talking about how the media covers sexual violence. This @KIRORadio piece, which implies that a crackdown on homeless people will protect women from rape, is a prime example of how not to cover sexual assault.https://mynorthwest.com/1355677/ballard-woman-car-dealership-sexual-assault/ …

Leaving aside the fact that they call activist Discovery Institute fellow a "journalist" (he is not), KIRO connects facts in ways that are not supported by reality: A woman was attacked; the perpetrator was homeless; therefore (they suggest) homeless men are more likely to rape.

Statistics would show not only that homeless people are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of attacks, but that women are FAR more likely to be raped by intimate partners and people they know, but those inconvenient truths would get in the way of the agenda here.

The agenda (Rufo's and KIRO's) is to create a false link between a policy—"allowing" homeless people to live outside of government camps or jails—and rape of a (not coincidentally) attractive, blonde woman, who could be "your" daughter, sister, cousin.

That the victim signed up for this voluntarily is beside the point. It is the responsibility of media not to repeat false narratives credulously, even if they are presented in well-lighted studios and with many tears.

There is almost no difference between this video and Trump parading white families who are the rare victims of violent crime by immigrants to "prove" to his supporters that immigrants should, as a class, be treated as less-than other human beings and locked up for "our" safety.

Again,
@KIRORadio is as culpable as Rufo here. Rufo has an agenda—he wants a harsh crackdown on people experiencing homelessness. So does KIRO, but they, in theory, have a journalistic responsibility to provide context and facts that Rufo, as a non-journalist, does not.5 replies 7 retweets 42 likesShow this thread
