I'll be on a KSARC panel tonight talking about how the media covers sexual violence. This @KIRORadio piece, which implies that a crackdown on homeless people will protect women from rape, is a prime example of how not to cover sexual assault.https://mynorthwest.com/1355677/ballard-woman-car-dealership-sexual-assault/ …

Leaving aside the fact that they call activist Discovery Institute fellow a "journalist" (he is not), KIRO connects facts in ways that are not supported by reality: A woman was attacked; the perpetrator was homeless; therefore (they suggest) homeless men are more likely to rape.

Erica, with all due respect: I'm a contributing editor at City Journal, you write a personal blog and beg for money on Patreon. I know you once worked as a journalist for The Stranger (and then fired), but that doesn't make you the arbiter of who is a journalist and who isn't.

I would also add that actual journalists kind of do get to be the arbiters of who counts as a member of their profession and what constitutes journalism; despite the current crop of self-appointed "journalists," words do still have meanings

City Journal is essentially the newsletter of a think-tank/advocacy organization. Claiming that writing for them or editing their work makes you a journalist is little different than a lobbyist claiming that their efforts make them a legislator.

Collated Manhattan Institute press releases is more of a zine than a news journal. Is there any original, sourced reporting pieces of yours you can direct us to?

Being a supposed libertarian I would think you of all people would be using Erica as an example of starting her own independent business and making a profit off it. Also why are you deleting comments from rape survivors who contradict you? Your agenda isn't based in fact.

City Journal is a propaganda rag for a right-wing think tank. Erica is a real journalist that actually cares about the truth. Go away Chris.

@rufodox Behind the 'cool' look you're really a nasty piece of work yourself, accusing @ericacbarnett of "begging for money". As a working journalist myself (Reuters, AFP etc.) I find your use of a rape victims' trauma to advance your own political agenda utterly amoral.

Appreciate this. I have a very long resume in print and online media, but people like Chris here love to belittle independent journalists because they perceive us as vulnerable. In fact, my success as an independent reporter now is due to the hard work I did for decades.
