It's not really a concept worthy hanging onto. Its "universality" makes it utterly useless. On the one hand, it's an objective category, describing the actions of humans as social animals. We signal our membership to the in-group by affirming the shared beliefs that define it.

But the people who use it, treat this signalling as a pathology. But, ofc, they are simply signalling to the outgroup (which is nothing other than their in-group) that they are not part of the in-group. It's signalling all the way down. But the group that use it as a pathology...

...don't realize this (or refuse to realize this) so they go right on signalling, all the while believing that they have escaped from it's power. It's embarrassing and shows a lack of self-awareness by a group constantly claiming to be 'the smart, non-ideological' ones.
