Anytime you hear the account of someone who survived jumping off a bridge, it's always emphasized how they regretted the jump as they were falling as if the fall was the moment of clarity and not the jump.

This would be my guess. I don't deny they felt something during the fall, evolutionary instinct will overwhelm you. I just don't like how commentators think only one take is valid.
