It is taking American conservatives a remarkably long time to embrace UBI. 1. They got ideological cover via Hayek. 2. I'm sure someone has figured out a way to make it biblical. 3. It's the easiest way to convince the majority of Americans to embrace strong immigration control.

As well, it puts responsibility back in the hands of the poor in many ways. There's more personal responsibility required than say food stamps. If they end up spending the money on drugs then that's their choice. In fact I imagine this will be the main leftist opposition to it.
