    pt1 My stance on the has been "space can wait for us to not approach this as colonizers" but I'm increasingly realizing that my fellow scientists need a lesson in not justifying imperialism with "progress and science". These arguments aren't novel and they're still not good.

    “The funds schools” isn’t a good argument. Hawaiʻi is ranked terribly for education. The state needs to be providing that funding to bring up educational quality and access in the state. The Mauna should not be a hostage for a quality education.

    Pt5 and we need to be willing to accept that there may not be a way to bring native people on board, and the correct response isn't to say "Well, we tried", it's to respect their wishes. We can say we tried and understand, without blame, that we scientists were asking too much.

    Pt4 I don't really believe there's no scenario where indigenous Hawaiians can be brought over to -wanting- a telescope, the most hardcore of sovereigntists aside. The problem is conflating all arguments with the easiest to attack and ignoring real, serious grievances. Stop that.

    Pt3 I'm horrified to see the same scientists that I know are so deeply aware of the struggles in the world moralizing their own interests at the expense of native peoples. Yes. a majority are pro-TMT. No, there is not nearly enough consensus to just ignore the crowd.

    Pt2 Almost every argument in the history of colonialism has been rooted in "progress", from European expansion into Africa to the dislocation of NA communities. "Science" isn't an inherently pure cause. said it best: "Science has no inherent ethics".

    Haven’t seen a strong pro- post from a non-Hawaiian from someone who isn’t either ignorant of the history of Hawaiians in their own land or taking some uncomfortably patronizing “this thing you don’t want will be good for you” stance isn’t an excuse for colonialism
