For the life of me I cannot rationalize the necessity for the NYT to publish information on the identity of the whistleblower. I feel that this careless act would give pause to future whistleblowers to consider coming forward when they have knowledge of a crime.

The president referred to the whistleblower and those around them as spies and directly implied they would be executed in smarter times. I was hoping the editor would make mention of that in his reader response. Update?
