That feeling of the story being too rushed is a major theme in novellas and the main reason I struggle with most of them. Although Nalini Singh tends to be the only author I have found that doesn't do that, they seem so balanced

A7: I think I only know the answer to that when I read one that DOES NOT work. A short story/novella requires a particular skill that some authors have in spades and others..not so much.

A7/Trying to do too much in the span allotted. Whenever that happens, that rushed feeling in plot or characterization makes me pull out of the story or novella. It's an amazingly delicate balancing act, to be sure.

Assuming a vignette is the same thing. I've read shorts that seemed more like deleted scenes, rather than fully formed stories.

Throwing a novella in a series because of fan demand for a certain character or characters. Readers can tell that you had no interest in the story. There are definitely authors who've written good novellas in this scenario, but the bad...
