We received a really clear Sentinel-1 SAR image of our intended THOR project work area this morning from , so I've annotated it to identify all the key geographical features. Thanks to for the imagery.

View from the bridge of the Nathaniel B Palmer yesterday as we broke through the sea ice barring our way to open water on the Amundsen Sea shelf. Fog meant the choice of route depended a lot on satellite images and radar. nearing ⁦⁩ work area.

Animation showing the death throes of the Thwaites Glacier Tongue. It can't last long now flowing and deforming at this rate.

⏲️ Tick-tock, the clock is ticking for Pine Island Glacier ⏲️ Major growth of cracks spotted by Sentinel-2 satellites. New fractures showing up, others growing more than 5 km within 6 days. Full-resolution animation ⬇️

We rappelled into the bergschrund of Thwaites Glacier to see if bedrock was exposed there so we could sample it and determine the last time it was exposed to sunlight (i.e. glacier retreat). Unfortunately, no luck, but VERY cool caves !

Ovo je potencijalno osjetljiv multimedijski sadržaj. Saznajte više

Not the first we've seen on RV Nathaniel B Palmer cruise , but it's my first iceberg photo this trip. Not a bad start eh?

Oh great (not). Just what we need on - a cluster of giant PIGlets trying to escape from Pine Island Bay just as RV Nathaniel Palmer is trying to get in there.

A couple of views of from the Korean research icebreaker Araon a couple of days ago (from , via ). In the foreground is the sheet of fast ice also seen in the Sentinel SAR satellite image I posted yesterday.

If you have not yet understood why scientists are focusing so much attention on , read this.

The Eastern Ice Shelf is where the MELT () and TARSAN teams have conducted hot water drilling and was deployed to explore the cavity beneath. The Glacier Tongue, or what's left of it, projects seaward from the fast-flowing glacier axis.

The image I've annotated is from a reduced resolution jpeg2000 file that is one of the options in , because the full resolution geotiff would jam the limited bandwidth of the RV Nathaniel B Palmer's satellite link. The full resolution image would show even more detail.

The image shows that there is still some landfast sea ice in part of the area where we'd like to work, but there is still time for this to change as other work being done in transit means we won't get there until the latter part of next week.

The MELT team (thanks !) drilled through up to 2,300 feet of ice – nearly a half mile – for Icefin to explore Thwaites Glacier grounding zone. BIG NEWS from Icefin:

We're going to spend a bit of time talking about on the BBC today. has just returned from the first joint UK-US surface expedition to try to understand precisely how this ice mass is changing.

Thanks for the plug. One minor correction - we'll be using various kinds of sediment coring devices driven by gravity, which is different from drilling.
