Not sure, didn't think to pick at it. Gonna have to go back to that trail before winter and check it out again. There were an awful lot of mushrooms there on friday, so I can probably be easily convinced.
May be a crustose #lichen. Can you scrape any free? Crustose lichens become one with the rock, tree, or other substrate.
