chairing is Dr Maire Cooney, chair of the @rcpsych Rainbow (LGBT+) SIG. she starts by making the point that some ask her if the College still needs an LGBT SIG? but vigilance is important - things can change quickly, and not always for the better. #RCPsychIC

Dr Peter Hughes, founder of the @rcpsych Volunteering and International SIG, states by explaining how sensitive this topic is. in some places you can't even discuss LGBT issues openly. the most stigmatised areas in his experience are HIV, mental health and LGBT. #RCPsychICpic.twitter.com/XvGCGghTv7

in a lot of places, if you're a man, as long as you don't talk about it, you might be okay. 'secret boyfriends' aren't uncommon. the situation is different for women - often forced into marriage with little freedom, says Dr Peter Hughes

in places like Iran, transgender is more accepted than being gay. some places have a concept of 'third gender' that has not recognition, explains Dr Hughes. but there are a lot of myths that LGBT people are a western issue, a 'white man' issue. obviously not the case. #RCPsychICpic.twitter.com/VzP5Hs7xDk

this is a typical statement from a prime minister of a LMIC. sadly too common. #RCPsychICpic.twitter.com/6OTOaMFZqv

doctors' attitudes can vary massively in these countries. older doctors more negative, younger female doctors in particular more accepting. #RCPsychICpic.twitter.com/kXLfSGuf7J

Yes in Iran, homosexual men have a choice. Execution or being trans. Not really a choice is it?

In Iran, the choice is 'transition' to the 'opposite sex' and 'become straight' or face the death penalty for being gay. 'Transitioning away the gay' is not only a phenomenon in Iran though.

Seriously, does ANYONE read these tweets before pressing send? Iran? Really? A place where the choice is surgery or death?
