This photo of a European photography awards ceremony somehow encapsulates every single thing that is wrong with photojournalism in the most mind-blowing, meta way possible. Social suffering, colonialism, emotional and physical distance, representation, the awards industry. Wow.pic.twitter.com/7ZVAA75x2d

Heartening Ryan that so many agree with you. That is a real step forward (imho). Maybe one day we will look back at the canon of 'great' photography and have a rethink. Hope so.

This industry needs to confront its past (and present, clearly), so it’s encouraging to see it struck a cord. Thank you for sharing it

        1. If the photo of the photo awards ceremony highlights those things attributed, does it become photo journalism itself? Or does that need critical intent of the photo grapher? 2. Twitter serendipity gave me this combo..pic.twitter.com/ijn5DWgwUc

Intent always matters. And I have no idea what your serendipity combo is supposed to mean.

Perfectly Ryan. I have always shivered within whenever i saw photojournalists cheering or even smiling on stage and in interviews after winning for pictures of pain and suffering, at awards ceremonies..

1/ Wanna add something. I don't know this guy (the photographer). Never heard of him. Never heard of that awards showcase either. But I fully admit I don't follow those sorts of things any more. All that to say, my feelings aren't personal to either.

2/ He's probably a great guy. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that his intentions in making the image were pure. But in the end, doesn't matter imho. We don't operate in a vacuum, and images like this just continue to perpetuate played-out stereotypes.
