Three separate reports including by the Pentagon Inspector General, by the United Nations and by ⁦@CSIS⁩ have estimated that ISIS still has between 20,000 and 30,000 fighters just in Iraq and Syria, but sure, let’s call the group “defeated.” #DejaVu http://p.nytimes.com/email/re?location=4z5Q7LhI+KVBjmEgFdYACPLKh239P3pgLn/2Vn6wWEmhCKmWixFVcU/WaNhY3P8h6VY+IG8GXw9xUrJgTqN8FaajsSyIl6pkYSSpTTVU5+zB1/yxVNRGECh+6YpVRsJcUfe8iZLahfWzlBjrPKlsIpUoieVKXH6gR3PW+xND9MsNanOakucahA==&campaign_id=60&instance_id=0&segment_id=8774&user_id=385bfcdc87ae25bca9f44a94fc6c8c22&regi_id=69115476ing-news …

Rukmini, isn't the danger now that ISIS will take advantage of the US withdrawal and come back like they did in 2013-2014? Or no?

If history is a guide, this plays directly into ISIS’ hands.

        How is "ISIS fighter" defined?

You’ll have to read each individual report. Methodologies vary, and critics have pointed to this as a problem. But no matter what the # of fighters now vs what existed in 2010 (when last pullout began) is far higher.

Well I would first question two terms, "ISIS fighter", and "defeat". How war ready are each of these? If most of the Command and Control Centers, and leaders are taken that is essential, and what is defeat nowadays against a combination of an organization, network and movement?

That same article you linked to does say: “The Islamic State, a militant group also known as ISIS, has lost an estimated 90 percent of its territory in Iraq and Syria, where the 2,000 American troops are mostly advising a militia made up of Kurdish and Arab soldiers.”

ISIS has lost 99 percent of the territory they once controlled in Iraq & Syria. Were you under the impression that territorial control is the only factor that defines ISIS’ strength? (Clue: From 2004 to 2013, group’s predecessor held almost no land & yet killed 1000s)

I understand that. I agree that saying they have been “defeated” is hyperbole. That said, they ARE weaker than they were, and I still support pulling US troops out as I don’t believe we should have ever been there in the first place.
