      Just noticed that Gestalt was deprecated in 10.8. This makes me sad.

      @ccgus As a result, there's no supported API in 10.8 to get the OS version. Also: what else were you still using Gestalt() for!?

      @grynspan @ccgus sysctl(3) with the kern.osrelease argument gets you the kernel version, from which you can compute the OS version.

          @rbrockerhoff Do you have an algorithm or table?

          @mjtsai for all past & current, kern.version returns x.y.z and OS X version will be 10.(x-4).y. Not sure about z though.

          @rbrockerhoff @mjtsai @ccgus Aha: And “sw_vers -productVersion” seems to be a documented, command line means of obtaining this.

          @danielpunkass @rbrockerhoff @mjtsai @ccgus Sure, but shelling out for something like that is sloppy.

          @marczak @rbrockerhoff @mjtsai @ccgus I don’t see a non-sloppy solution here, do you? :)

          @danielpunkass @marczak @mjtsai @ccgus so what API does sw_vers call...?

          @rbrockerhoff @marczak @mjtsai @ccgus fopen :) I bet it just reads the aforementioned plist file, also cited in the man page for sw_vers.

          @rbrockerhoff @ccgus Only if you know the mapping. It's not future-proof.

          0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
        2. Rainer Brockerhoff ‏@rbrockerhoff 13 Sep 2012

          @grynspan @ccgus the mapping works for all past and current versions, and there's no reason for it to change. Of course nothing is "proof".

          @rbrockerhoff It's not documented to be so anywhere, is it? // @ccgus

        4. Rainer Brockerhoff ‏@rbrockerhoff 13 Sep 2012

          @grynspan well, you don't have to map it to anything to compare it against any value :-) // @ccgus

          @rbrockerhoff Alas, I live in a world where customers want me to report OS versions. They'd die if they knew what Darwin was. // @ccgus

        6. Rainer Brockerhoff ‏@rbrockerhoff 13 Sep 2012

          @grynspan so, 10.(Darwin-4). If Darwin>12, say "unknown version"?// @ccgus

          0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
        7. Jonathan Grynspan ‏@grynspan 13 Sep 2012

          @rbrockerhoff It's the "unknown version" part that nobody likes. Besides, we can always parse SystemVersion.plist. ;) // @ccgus
