How do you sync this across hosts? Local data is great if performance is more important than consistency, reliability, or scale, but I wouldn't recommend this as a general rule for what most people store in "databases."

So it sounds like the control data is pretty small, if a full copy of it can live on every node?

Yes we expect it to stay <50GB for the foreseeable future. Right now we run most of our services on a monolithic cluster of instances. As we grow this will also become unsustainable and things will get split out. At that time we expect to federate the database.
