So many academics forget that our goal, as a profession, is *not* to publish papers. It's to change the world.

I respect those activities, and would classify them under "changing the world," as long as they ultimately impact someone external to the inwards facing academic community. The latter phrase is a must. Work must *eventually* leave academia to be worthwhile.
Well then most mathematicians and theorists are screwed, unless the timeframe under consideration is decades or centuries.

There’s a Kuhnian thing here about influencing other academics (padadigm shift) that I might maybe agree with. But Id never close the door on academia for its own sake having value.

Seems to me like the very notion of what is “worthy of our time” depends on the timeframe we reflect upon the subject. Centuries ago, the most noble and worthy thing to do was to “think and create abstract logical & philosophical artifacts”. And to many today, philosophy is dead.
