Also a reminder to senior faculty that we need to redefine expectations and serve as example for our Ph.D students and junior faculty. I would like to see more events centered around defining healthy expectations and providing mentoring for PhD students and junior faculty.

I like this idea. Any concrete suggestions? I have informal chats and coffee with younger faculty. Any thoughts about events centered around junior faculty?

The best metric for success (in terms of productivity) is the number of papers you submit that *you* feel good about. If you think it's good work and if you stay calibrated with the field, then eventually it will get in. There is too much randomness to define success on accepts.

How much do you want to be defined by your work anyway? I strive to be a decent husband, loving father and passable cook for my friends with a whisky habit. Anything else is icing on the cake.
-
Indeed. That is the right (and healthy) attitude. I only have to tweet the reminder because most PhD students (and many junior academics) have been trained to define their own value in papers published.

Just curious what do you first see when you invite a faculty candidate to your department? I was under the impression that the first metric is papers of the candidate.

My guess is every dept does it a bit differently, & there's no prescribed quantifiable metric candidates are sorted on. Often papers act as a validation metric, applied to potential candidates of interest identified by metrics like: problem space, key contributions, letters, ...
