(Background: More often than elsewhere, I hear “Oh, you are a programmer. You must be smart!” or “I don’t think I’d be smart enough for programming!”)

It's also funny how everything seems to evolve into soft-skills. When reviewing architectures you need to be confident in speaking up, when debugging you need to be able to brainstorm hypothesis, and when facing hard problems you need to know how and whom to ask for help.
-
True! For big projects, you need teams and then the ability to function as part of a team is very important.

It’s weird tho. I think the qualities that make you a good TDD developer or QA lead make you horrible in social situations. I mean you’re literally wired to figure out how to break crap; you know where to push, how you can crumble it all :) it requires extra patience to love us.
-
True. Many programmers seem to like control and precisely categorizing things. And that doesn’t work well for humans.

I've always thought that intelligence was not how much you know, but how much you _can_ know, implying a drive to learn. This would fit your suspicions.
-
True! “Knowing a lot” and “being intelligent” are often conflated, but they are different (each is useful but in a different way).

Suggesting that a relatively brute force "AI" plus a compiler or interpreter would succeed at programming.
-
I’m not saying that nothing else matters! Just that tenacity is undervalued and intelligence is overvalued.

This is true for every skill. You can be the most talented pianist in the world, but unless you’re willing to spend hours practicing, failing, and pushing through the hard parts, you’ll never be any good. Persistence and patience to learn a skill trumps “talent” every time.
-
But somehow the way interviews are conducted on candidates doesn't reflect any of this "patience", "persistent": whiteboardings, DS+ algorithms coding It's all about speed.
