My two latest JavaScript books: “JS for impatient programmers” (free online): Learn the language, up to and including ECMAScript 2019. Book, exercises, quizzes. “Deep JS” (50% free online): Go deeper.

MacOS: Recommendation for a simple(!) alarm clock? There is an old app called “Alarm Clock 2.4.5” that has a great no-frills UI. Alas, macOS will soon stop supporting such old apps.

iCloud lesson I learned today (macOS)—if you need to log out of an account and then restore it: Deleting and re-downloading (calendars, iCloud Drive, emails) is *much* faster than keeping the data. iCloud’s way of reconnecting and syncing existing data doesn’t really work.

Not always having to have an opinion is relaxing. Simple opinions don’t do complex topics (with many factors) justice anyway.

Both Vue & React are great. This is not about a false dichotomy. But... Can someone give me a succinct list of reasons why a senior React developer would abandon React and move to Vue? I’m looking for insightful tradeoffs here. e.g. I want X problems not Y problems. Z is better.

It's the year 2020, and we're still finding buffer overflows in programs written in C. Fortunately, those programs are only esoteric, rarely installed programs like... <checks notes> sudo.

So, Apple got inspired by HTML and React’s imperativeness and created SwiftUI. Did anyone get equally inspired in the opposite direction? SwiftUI seems to document View interaction pretty neatly, a React UI library could definitely copy it.

Has anyone used the TypeScript compiler to analyze source files via a Node.js script? I see two options: 1. Access the compiler directly: 2. Use the language server protocol (only found docs for VSCode extensions).

I recently decided in favor of one service (over another) due to it having better documentation. AFAICT, people writing docs are underpaid.

“No but …” vs. “Yes and …” makes a huge different w.r.t. how friendly a comment comes across.

99 smartphones are transported in a handcart to generate virtual traffic jam in Google Maps. Through this activity, it is possible to turn a green street red which has an impact in the physical world by navigating cars on another route!

Notably, the ISO date is the only one where you don’t have to document if day or month comes first. That’s why I like it: It works well across all countries. And it’s also automatically sorted properly.

An older woman came into the bookstore today. I made a joke about a credit card reader issue and she said "these things are all programmed by twenty-five-year-old boys who don't comment their code" and somehow we ended up having a great conversation about programming and biases.

Many services put “Sign in” and “Sign up” buttons close to each other. To me, this signals: They value new customers more than existing customers (for whom logging in is harder—it always takes me a moment to figure out which button to click). Stripe, OTOH (Dashboard=login): 👍

Uphold link bar at top: login buttons for existing and new customers are close to each other.
PayPal link bar at top: login buttons for existing and new customers are close to each other.
Stripe link bar at top: There is only a login button for existing customers.
