I am considering a second PhD in mathematical epidemiology.

Why do you all y’all sound so surprised? All three of my theses were quantitative/formal modeling/mathematical modeling. I became qualitative in earnest AFTER my PhD. I did take qualitative methods at the PhD level during my doctorate, though. But my dissertation is math-y.

People seem surprised I am considering doing a second PhD. First: yes, I discourage anyone interested in doing a PhD from doing so given the bleak academic market. HOWEVER: I never did a PhD to get a job. I did it because I’m a nerd and I love learning and studying.

I would have several advantages and many disadvantages. Advantages: I have mentored and graduated several PhDs. I know how to recognize a gap in the literature and structure a research project and conduct it until completion. I know “how to PhD” Disadvantages: the job market.

Why, then, you ask, and not just study by myself? I study the comparative politics of public policy. I get paid to do research in this field, not in mathematical epidemiology. I do not know enough mathematical epidemiology to get a post-PhD job. If I study a PhD it would be

... if and only if I got paid to do it. A challenge: given my personality, hard to know how would I interact with a potential PhD advisor. “Dude, I know exactly how many papers I need to get published to get my degree, don’t get in my way and stop me from graduating”.

The appeal: going back to the kind of mathematical modeling I did in undergrad. Though the mathematical model of degradation kinetics of recalcitrant chemical compounds is logarithmic rather than exponential, there’s a link between transmission models and biodegradation kinetics.

This interest in mathematical epidemiology is what made me follow @maiamajumder and @sherrirose in the first place.
Also, I know math and I love it. I do qualitative work because it answers the questions I like asking, not because I can’t do regressions or multilevel models.

I'm going to smile and nod because i legit understood a few dozen words out of this. *But* I can fully understand doing work you love!
