Repubs are in a bind of their own making. They tried to sell their terrible policies to people by stoking white nationalist populism, and now they're captives of the base they created. First it turned on the "libs" and now it's turned on them.

"Pragmatic" for many is an excuse to accept bad behavior, attacks on norms, cutting corners, not asking hard questions of YOUR team, etc. Most present-day Republicans use "pragmatic" to rationalize getting desired results by ignoring the unethical means employed towards that end.
