    Enormous irony here. Warren would have been CFPB Director if Obama hadn't caved to the banks, who lobbied hard to block Warren from that job. So she ran for Senate instead. The Obama admin tried to placate Wall Street and ended up empowering one of its sharpest critics.

    Speaking of which, in 2016 the CEO of SMC— Stanford's investment arm—was paid $3.5m, or about twice SUP's subvention. Does this seem like a cheap shot? Sure. But then again, the third richest university in the world deciding it can't be bothered with a Press is pretty cheap, too.

    So, Surreal Interluders. I don’t think we have license to believe in uncaused actors in human affairs and, absent alien landings, won’t. Worse, I don’t think we have license to believe in inconsequential actions of this magnitude. Signed, a historian.

    This is the thing many people never quite seem to understand about what we infelicitiously, but always will, call Watergate: the entire Nixon presidency was shot through with criminality from end to end. It wasn't just a burglary. Nixon knew this, and feared its exposure.
