A solid 10% of being an engineering manager is asking two people if they've talked to each other yet

Here's a thing that happens: "We tried your advice by not trying your advice except partly where we did what we want but gave it your labels and it didn't work and therefore you are wrong."

Does anyone else in software hate the "move fast and break things" concept or is that literally just me?

Email and meetings are the entropy of work. The more people you meet, the more they take over — and eventually, they want to occupy 100% of your productive time. But if you want to make things, you need free time. Make space for creative work.

just heard in a presentation: "we decided to use microservices to reduce technical complexity" ... i thought people would have realized in 2020 that microservices *increase* (operational) complexity by orders of magnitude. well, will probably take some more time to sink in ...

I've worked professionally in software for 18 years and I can say with certainty that you should not use software for anything

It‘s sad that the British Members of the European Parliament have to leave this week. But try to see things positive: At least you don‘t have to be in grey and rainy Brussels no more, but can spend your time back home in ... well, just try to see things positive!

A common error in prayer technique is sitting around asking for stuff. Most experts agree a more effective method is getting off your ass and doing something.

indeed. while the first one requires a lot of work like understanding the current situation from multiple angles, neutrally comparing solution options, helping other people to understand all this and more, the second one only requires to do the "cool stuff everybody does" 1/2

Justifying each change in an architecture is much harder than adopting mindlessly a paradigm like . But that is what real software architecture is about.

Common causes of bad decisions: 1. Assumptions from small sample sizes 2. Wanting the world to work the way we want 3. Conforming to expectations/authority/group 4. Blindness to large trends 5. Inability to determine "and then what" 6. Using incorrect maps What am I missing?

A year ago I stumbled on the art of Zoe Leonard as I was walking around town. It is a radical feminist poem from the early 1990s. The picture is one of my favorites and I love that I caught the woman reading it as she passed.

bunch of friends and I are talking about a conf idea called FuckedUpCon where you give a tech talk on how you fucked up and almost brought down the company. cool idea, would have lots of humbling learnings, but probably be super crazy to deal with liability-wise.

In my opinion, Software Architecture is mainly about: 1. Drawing boxes and arrows 2. Talking with people 3. Facilitating and participating in design sessions 4. Splitting changes into realistic chunks of work 5. Encouraging others to participate in SW architecture 1/ 👇
