My son taught himself to solve Rubik's cubes using tutorials from the internet. I'm fascinated by his curiosity and desire to learn new things. I'm also amazed at how the internet has made it so much easier for this generation's curious children to find the knowledge they seek.

It's tough, I'm just thinking out loud. Maybe all I can do is try to be nicer to some people. Even some of those I frequently strongly disagree with I can be nicer to. I don't worship civility, but I am who I know myself to be, and he's a nice guy.

Trolls are a problem, often brought on by the topics I engage in. I don't really mute or block, but maybe that's something I need to reconsider. To make room for intense but decent engagement, maybe I need to get rid of trolls. It's a challenge though.

It's a tight needle to thread. There are times where being mean is a necessity, where being angry is a necessity, but maybe I can be more patient with those I know engage reasonably, and those who may sincerely not know enough on an esoteric topic.

As I deal with more and more people, I'm finding my patience to be shrinking. It's tough to engage on the topics I do, know the harm of the ideas I challenge, yet remember that I'm generally a nice person.

Emil Kirkegaard ladies and gentlemen. Bastion of moral worth (and pedophilia defender). 🙄

Saying the quiet part out loud. This guy has quite the track record of defending pedophilia, supporting eugenics and now saying clearly he thinks moral worth correlates with IQ.

He was in fact the first African American to earn a PhD in *any* subject from an American university, one of the first ten people of any race to earn a PhD in physics from an American university, and one of the first Americans to earn a PhD in any subject in the US.

Very bold of Charles Murray to make such a strong claim against hereditarianism!

My son and daughter sound so amazing when they are playing well together. They make up the most adorable and imaginative games and stories. Parenting happy and creative children is one of life's greatest joys.

is published this week, so I’m doing a little advent calendar of scientific racism. Y’know, for fun. Let’s start with the great hero of the Enlightenment: Voltaire. (Romans: Les Lettres D’amabed, 1769)

Unable to successfully challenge Kevin's work refuting the hereditarian claim that "race" differences in IQ are mostly genetic, hereditarians turned to accusations that he was really endorsing their position So Kevin again gives them a spanking with the data.

The thing about gifted programs in schools is that you grow up to realize that having a high IQ doesn't necessarily mean you'll do anything crazy. There are a lot of geniuses doing regular jobs. I think too much weight is placed on IQ.

Okay, at this point I'm done with . They may have tried to be an org advocating viewpoint diversity, but it's clear at this point they are themselves driving specific right-wing viewpoints. Them promoting scientific racism is my last straw.

There seems to have been confusion at my point. My point is don't discriminate against people of Asian descent because of this virus if you don't discriminate against random people around you out of fear they may secretly give you the flu.

This is why I think freaking out about a random person of Chinese descent giving you the coronavirus is silly.

This understanding, which is imminently reasonable and relatable to me, is often dishonestly framed by critics of intersectionality as the idea that we think "objectivity is white supremacy".

It's really hard to help people understand that illnesses don't belong to populations. All else being equal, a random Chinese-American in New York is no more likely to have the coronavirus than a random Irish-American person in New York.

    * see my wife watching The Bachelor * Me: "Has a minority woman ever won on this show?" Her: "Don't ask stupid questions" I don't even know why they put themselves through that charade.
