This was less the case for the boomers who benefited from the expansion of higher education as both students and faculty- but I agree, that was a blip in time.

The GI Bill after WW II transformed some fields (anthropology) and brought a whole sector of white men into the academy, during this phase.

Part of this is socialization. If you didn't grow up in a professional family you have a lot of catching up do in terms of micro-habits and manners that mark any profession. Just a thought.

How about we don't equate intellectuals - thinking, theorizing, making sense of the world - with the white and the wealthy. Theorizers, knowledge producers, have been everywhere, always. The academy has done a poor job recognizing that.

At elite universities, I would love to know the percentage of faculty that went to elite prep and boarding schools.

Among the 34 members of my department the number is zero. And very small among those I know at other departments.

@monica_keane. The future for many is better in the trades. I saw this coming as an Xer, but try telling that to baby boomers and earlier. It's like they were bitten by the college zombie.
