A very cool magazine more of you should know about is , which devotes whole issues to in-depth understanding of particular countries/cities/regions. Their new issue, out today, is all about Ukraine, and I'm honored to be a part of it.

And we’re supposed to pretend that Republicans allow unfettered freedom to businesses.

Doesn't seem outlandish to expect that a million Americans are going to have died by the time this is "over." Hard to remember now, but the prevailing feeling among decisionmakers last spring was that predictions of 60k or 100k dead were wildly outlandish

We have not adequately reckoned with how close Trump came to a successful coup. A slightly more malleable AG and a slightly more malleable Pentagon and he’d have been successful. We can’t count on those bulwarks holding.

Here’s the draft letter Jeffrey Clark wanted acting AG Rosen and Richard Donoghue to sign off on to send to officials in Georgia urging them to halt certification of Joe Biden’s election win. Rosen and Donoghue refused. abcn.ws/3xgKYtq

This is astonishing: Aransas and Nueces counties, where Harvey made landfall, did not receive a dime. Neither did Jefferson County, which recorded highest rain totals. Same for Houston and Harris County, even though the county suffered the most deaths/flooded homes from the storm
Quote Tweet
New: Texas disbursed $1B in federal Hurricane Harvey aid. We found it disproportionately went to inland counties with less damage than coastal ones that bore the brunt of the storm — and are most at risk for stronger hurricanes fueled by climate change.⬇️ houstonchronicle.com/news/houston-t

I appreciate that what's happening in the Knesset is a shit show, but it's far from the unprecedented disaster people are painting it as on this website of scant historical recollection. The Knesset has always been, uh, what's a more pointed way of saying "rowdy"?

In case this gets lost: The most sweeping Texas elections bill was apparently so hastily put together that in the new section about overturning elections, the authors misspelled "equal" as "egual"
Quote Tweet
That new language was a straight copy/paste, folks. I don't see "egual" in the dictionary. That shows how quickly this new language was brought. lrl.texas.gov/scanned/87ccrs #txlege

Sincere question: doesn’t this distinction contradict the idea that political contributions deserve First Amendment protections _as political speech?_
Quote Tweet
NEWS: #McConnell in Kentucky calls actions of #MLB, #Coke, and #Delta in opposition of Georgia voting law ‘stupid.’ ‘My warning to corporate America is to stay out of politics,’ he says. ‘I’m not talking about political contributions, he adds.
