Yesterday was my 1 year at ; today that journey ends. I'm stunned and sad to leave some of the most thoughtful, kind, and skilled people I've ever gotten to work with. A truly disappointing move; hope the stock bump was worth it. Goodbye and thanks for all the fish 🫡

I don't post about my personal life on here very much for all the reasons, but tonight I played my first show after ~6mo since I started learning and I'm very proud of myself! ty to for putting me on a much bigger stage than I expected and generally being great 💙

Um, is Built for Shopify still a thing? It occurs me that as the sole person who was in charge of the App Design Guidelines AND working on Polaris, I might possibly be the world's foremost expert in Shopify app design standards who doesn't currently work at Shopify…

I'll be taking a short break, but then I'm open to new opportunities, especially in design systems and mission-focused companies! I have a lot to give, and I look forward to accomplishing new and exciting things.
nostalgically looked at the listing for my old DC apartment and am unduly pleased that despite the entire place having been updated, the queer + trans ♥️ stickers I placed on the washer/dryer are still there.
Screenshot of a listing photo showing a dual washer-dryer in a closet, the top with a rainbow-striped heart sticker and the bottom with a similar heart sticker in the trans flag stripes. A portion of the previous image can be seen of a kitchen with updated counters and stovetop.
I love being called a seasoned design leader because it implies that I spent a lot of time stewing in some hot spices. And you know what? I did. Super excited to chat with Dan tomorrow! 💯

Part of having lived through 3 years of a pandemic and aaall that came with that is that I feel so much pressure to live up to who I used to be and I just really...am not that person anymore. Unfortunately, I'm much worse.

sorry but I'm having a mental health and did not intend to wade into design twitter, I don't have the emotional fortitude for this right now, deleted ttyl
Governor Abbott has done literally nothing to fix our busted, corrupt, privatized power grid — and now this once in a lifetime breakdown is happening AGAIN. Completely unacceptable. All I have keeping me warm right now is pure unadulterated fury.

I have subscribed to so many newsletters from people I find interesting or admirable that my inbox is a mess and I read none of them. Does that stop me from continuing to subscribe? No it does not.

I accidentally spent the entire day coding and I literally haven't been happier in months?? Hmm I hope I don't learn anything from this.
When Delta cancels your specifically-chosen, nonstop main cabin flight and rebooks you on a next-day redeye Basic economy flight with a 2h layover in Atlanta, you really feel the extra sting of all the little indignities of budget travel.
tiny in the face of everything right now but it should not be legal to auto-subscribe my email to your terrible newsletter every single purchase I make.

Layoffs to my left, shutdowns to my right. Really feels like a lot of outlets and work that I love is getting steamrolled at a new level.
My biggest issue with Workplace is that Meta’s emojis offend me, aesthetically, at the deepest level of my core and so now my expressive capacity has greatly diminished.
Sometimes I think about how we evolved to have sentience and fully created a whole-ass SOCIETY and this is what we've done with it. We developed intelligence and technology, and are instead using it to starve out every part of what makes being human beautiful and joyful. Why??!?!

Ok, video games have peaked. There's a visual novel coming out that supposedly actually prepares your 2022 US federal tax return through romancing an anime girl. I.... man, this is a lot. store.steampowered.com/app/2363850/Ta

I'm reading a book a week in 2023. Classics, sci-fi, nonfiction, or anything people highly recommend. I'll keep adjusting the list. Start on Monday, done by Sunday. Might make lowkey videos of takeaways. If you want to read along, the current list is here: lexfridman.com/reading-list

awhile back I saw someone tweet about how a get-to-know-you question they love is "what would be your job if you had no morals" and anyway how do I get the gig where I say absolute gibberish once a month to parrot a dumbass wannabe genius and secure that millionaire annual bag

lots of feelings about the Oscars rn but I'd like to mention as someone who watches all the animated shorts every year, the one that won was both the most obviously produced and least deserving

Formats of work I think I would truly enjoy: - apprentice to a master craftsperson passing on deep knowledge to a youth with great promise - revered knowledge keeper for a community - one half of a pair of high performing and idiosyncratic artists working in cahoots
It was hot as balls out today but I managed to find some shade and some beauty 💚
Trees against the sky in the late afternoon, light cutting through the leaves
Raquel with her hair in space buns on a picnic blanket with a sketchbook, crossword puzzle, water bottle and other sundries behind her

Signed up for a free trial of Acrobat to fill out an insurance form. Naturally, I went to immediately cancel it (when it still didn't work, lol) and got this message (!) I knew they were dirty, but what in all the deceptive, "dark pattern" bullshit... honestly fuck you .
Error modal reading:
"Are you sure you want to cancel your annual plan paid monthly?

If you cancel now, you may be charged a cancellation fee of 50% of the remaining balance of your contract. To avoid a fee, we suggest that you wait until your renewal date."

had major config fomo, then saw this was the library I could work at
Gorgeous old building with patterned wooden floors and an elevated painted dome. Students are all sat and working at tables under the incredible ceilings and columns.
Three gorgeous Arabic style windows and walls lined with blue tile work over a striped herringbone wood floor
Another hall of gorgeous old well appointed bookshelves and large windows, with working students. A piece of blue tile work on the wall reads "Silêncio" in cursive.
Since I have time to learn some shit now, what are the most interesting and avant-garde creative/front-end code courses these days? I want to make beautiful, purposeless, websites or whatever.
Several years ago before this place was...what it is now, I made the joke that I'd do anything for a blue check. I believe that everything since is the universe teaching me a lesson. I apologize to all those affected by my actions, I was young and very stupid.

God, I love the Stark team. Really exciting update for them, and I particularly love their privacy-first and opinionated context. Worth a read ⤵️

I just have to say. I've loved autostraddle for what feels like my whole life. I worked for them as an intern, and then as a staff writer. I've been an A+ member and supporter and friend. This...absolutely sucks and was handled so badly.

for my own mental health every time I see another post on LinkedIn about some wonderful person I know being laid off I'm going to go outside and scream

I love sparkles sooo much but designers will probably need to align on a definition for wtf “” means in a UI context. I've seen it used for algorithmic feed (twitter), visual effects (google meet), "enhanced" playlists (Spotify), I know elsewhere…
Putting it out there: I'd love to do more of these kinds of AMAs/moderated talks and panels — if you or your org are interested, please let me know!

So super duper inspired by @RaquelDesigns talk today at @designsystemu. She shared so much of her great wisdom!
granted my brain is probably processing some trauma this week in particular but I feel like someone dunked my brain in soggy cotton. I've felt so creatively stifled for years now, just lethargy. sparks of intelligence are short, unreliable, and weeks apart.
Honestly, I'm still a hater but if the apple vision thing would solve my back and wrist issues from working, I would in fact pay $4,000 for it. I'm so sorry everyone. I'm over 30.

Feels extremely ghoulish to get email invites to personal jobs listings supposedly from a former co-worker that then doesn't tell me who and charges a monthly fee to join?
this is the designer version of vim. just do what I do in both situations and throw your laptop into the sea.

I'm begging connected hardware to stop relying on its software to work. This should be perfectly capable of functioning through a few small buttons and a one-and-done preferences set up. It probably doesn't even need an app. Stop making apps!!
